The administration of US President Donald Trump has created a surprise in food markets after announcing broad tariff exemptions covering a range of basic agricultural goods, in a move aimed at reducing inflationary pressures and easing the burden of food costs on American families.

According to the decision issued on Friday, key imports such as coffee, cocoa, bananas, and some beef products were exempted from the high customs duties that were applied earlier in the year, which had prompted many distributors to raise prices significantly.

This move comes at a time when Trump is facing increasing political criticism related to rising grocery prices and escalating food costs, especially after previous tariffs affected supply chains and raised prices for products such as coffee, chocolate, and beef.

The exemptions were expanded to include additional goods.

The exemptions did not stop at basic goods, as they also included a range of fruits popular in American markets such as tomatoes, avocados, coconuts, oranges, and pineapples , in addition to reducing tariffs on both black and green tea , as well as spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg .

Market analysts expect this move to help ease price pressures in the coming period, especially on goods directly related to household consumption, which may boost demand levels and alleviate trade tensions in some sectors.

Trade experts also believe the new measure may be part of a broader strategy to support consumers amid rising inflation in recent years, as well as to boost the purchasing power of middle- and low-income earners.
