In a new escalation of tensions between the world's two largest economies, China blamed former US President Donald Trump and his administration for exacerbating the trade war, after he announced his plan to impose additional tariffs of 100% on Chinese exports.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce confirmed in an official statement that Washington "continues to pursue hostile policies," including blacklisting Chinese companies, stressing that Beijing is not seeking confrontation but "will not hesitate to defend its interests."

The US escalation comes after Trump announced comprehensive restrictions on Chinese exports, including vital software, metals, and sensitive technologies, to be implemented starting November 1, signaling a return to the trade war after a temporary truce between the two sides.

For its part, Beijing responded with a series of countermeasures, most notably expanding restrictions on rare earth exports, opening an antitrust investigation against the American company Qualcomm, and imposing fees on American ships in Chinese ports.

Analysts believe this escalation reflects the shift of the conflict between Washington and Beijing to a deeper stage that goes beyond tariffs towards a competition for global industrial and technological influence, especially given the reliance of major American companies such as Apple and Tesla on production within China.

Experts predict that this tension will lead to new disruptions in global supply chains, while China insists that the impact of its actions will be limited to civilian uses.
In the absence of official responses from the White House, attention remains focused on the anticipated meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, amid questions about whether it will reopen channels of dialogue or usher in a new phase of the trade war.
