The British economy recorded slight growth of 0.1% during August, in line with analysts' expectations, reflecting the continued economic slowdown in the United Kingdom amid monetary policy uncertainty and upcoming financial challenges.
According to official data released on Thursday, October 16 , industrial production rose by 0.4% , while the services sector remained unchanged, and the construction sector declined by 0.3% , confirming that the engines of economic growth are still facing multiple pressures.
July's data was revised to show a contraction of 0.1% after being unchanged in the initial estimates, compared to growth of 0.4% in June, reinforcing signs of an economic slowdown during the third quarter of the year.
Analysts believe that the limited pace of growth was not surprising, as economists expect economic activity to remain weak with rising unemployment and declining wage growth.
Attention is also turning to the Bank of England’s next meeting on November 6 , amid expectations of an interest rate cut to boost growth, despite the likelihood of the committee being cautious before the autumn budget announcement on November 26 , which is expected to include tax increases and spending cuts , potentially putting pressure on consumption and business investment in the coming period.
Estimates suggest that the British economy could face a further slowdown if consumer confidence declines and the property sector remains weak, despite the average house price reaching £271,000 according to the latest Nationwide Bank data.
