Global oil prices recorded a sharp decline during trading today, falling by more than 5%, amid clear indications of easing geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, which prompted markets to reduce the risk premium that had recently supported prices.
This decline came after statements by US President Donald Trump indicating that Tehran was conducting “serious talks” with Washington, a move interpreted by markets as a possible start to a diplomatic path that would reduce the likelihood of military confrontation in the region, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important arteries of global energy supplies.
Brent crude futures fell sharply after hitting six-month highs in previous sessions, while West Texas Intermediate crude suffered similar losses amid heavy profit-taking by investors.
Analysts believe that calming fears related to supply disruptions, along with the OPEC+ alliance's decision to keep production levels unchanged, revealed the fragility of the fundamental factors in the oil market, especially in light of the abundance of supply and weak seasonal demand.
Forecasts indicate that oil prices will remain highly sensitive to any political or economic developments in the coming period, as investors await the course of US-Iranian relations, decisions of global central banks, and the performance of the global economy.
